Eliminating Hyperthyroidism/Graves Disease

Although this post is focused on my own experiences of hyperthyroidism the information contained here will benefit anyone for any health issue that you may be having. This is common sense information that anyone can and should use. You will feel better, look better and just be healthier!

I wanted to do a post about an issue that I have been learning a lot about. Two years ago or so I was tested and my TSH  thyroid stimulating hormone was way low but my thyroid hormone was fine so their was no sign of imminent danger. I did what I usually do lol! And I ignored it. I couldn't get over some symptoms that I was having like being sleepy all the time, depression, mood swings, enlarged thyroid, trouble organizing thoughts, anxiety real bad at times, heart beating fast and just going insane lol! I don't  know why I am feeling this way or if it has anything to do with the low TSH, as it goes my actual thyroid hormone is normal. While trying to figure all this out I have been doing a lot of research about hyperthyroid or Graves disease especially about how to treat it naturally.

I wanted to post about it because I know that this is something I have seen in my own family and many others and we need to know how to treat it without drugs and anything else that is ailing us for that matter. After reading this you will have a good handle on what to do at least to get started healing your self and getting back to your old self again!

Hyperthyroidism also known as Graves Disease is a autoimmune problem, meaning the immune system is attacking the thyroid and causing it not to function properly. Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid produces to much hormone, Hypothyroid being when the thyroid produces to little hormone. Your thyroid is a gland in the front of your neck . It controls your metabolism, which is how your body turns food into energy. It also affects your heart, muscles, bones, and cholesterol.

Having too much thyroid hormone can make a lot of things in your body speed up. You may lose weight quickly, have a fast heartbeat, sweat a lot, or feel nervous and moody. Or you may have no symptoms at all. While your doctor is doing a test for another reason, he or she may discover that you have hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is easily treated. With treatment, you can lead a healthy life. Without treatment, hyperthyroidism can lead to serious heart problems, bone problems, and a dangerous condition called thyroid storm.

Being someone who has read a lot about natural health I new that anything that my body was experiencing was due to what was going into it. Since I was a teenager I have been health conscious but after my first pregnancy a lot of that went out the window and I just ate a lot and stopped exercising. After my first and second child I still was not doing what I knew I should.

I focused on my kids and husband and that is pretty much it although cooking healthy foods is important to me so I try to do that most of the time and always have for the most part. I went back for more blood work and found my TSH still very low! I guess it is time to start doing something about it :)

The Dr said I was a puzzle and he wanted me to do the thyroid uptake scan with radio active medication. I have not done this yet however and canceled the appointment. I don't know about you but taking radio active medication before having an x ray is not something I feel to good about. I will do it if it is absolutely necessary but for now I just don't know about it.

I know that my issues what ever they are, are do to my immune system not functioning at optimal performance and it is do to the things that I have done to my body and not done to it. You may not agree but being a person partial to nature this is just what I believe. According to a report by the U.S. Office of Technology Assessment only 10-20% of standard medical procedures are effective.

When applied natural means far out way the doctors way. There is a reason why many doctors are turning to more natural treatments once again for there patients although they are hindered by pharmaceutical companies, insurance and the government from doing so. Although I understand the need for emergency care and other treatments I prefer a natural method better. In fact in this country we are the best when it comes to emergency trauma care.

One of the reasons for this is simply because many of the treatments that we have were developed in times of war and are best when used quickly for emergency care. The rest of the time we should be following a natural approach and resisting the run to the Dr for every little ailment.

With all of that being said I wanted to share with you about how to treat Graves Disease or Hyperthyroidism  naturally. Now I am not saying that it will work for everyone and as always consult your doctor for his medical opinion, he or she may even learn something lol! If you are receiving medical treatments or taking medication don't stop unless your doctor says it is OK, but apply the recommendations outlined here and in the Healthy Healing book. When conditions improve act accordingly.

With any natural treatment no matter what the issue is that you are having following a good natural life style is key to overcoming anything that is not functioning properly in your body. There are many books on natural health that you can buy and you should have at least one good, natural health how to book in your home. The one that I have is called Healthy Healing by Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D.. I will be giving recommendations from this book.

No matter what you are experiencing with your health it is do to your immune system not functioning at optimal performance this is caused by what we have done or not done, plain and simple! In other words the chemicals that we are exposed to, the chemicals that we willingly put into our bodies and all of the wonderful healing foods that we have not eaten, as well as our bad health habits, are the cause of our damaged immune system.

In the book Healthy Healing Linda Page says that for every one year of illness we must apply one month of healing. This is good new and bad news! The good news is that we can turn our health around in just a few short months! The bad news is that it won't happen just by taking a pill or having some procedure. It will take work on my part, on your part to make this happen. We live in a take a pill for every problem society and for the most part this has caused a population that is sicker than ever before! You just can't fix a over toxic system by putting more toxic stuff into it!

So what can we do to combat Hyperthyroidism or Graves Disease and just about anything else naturally? The first step to any healing program is just living a healthier life style by eliminating as many chemicals from your environment as possible, because you are worth it, your family is worth it!

Remember this: If you want to live, eat living foods! There are essentially two kinds of food, living and dead. Anything that you have to kill to eat is a dead food, likewise foods that still contain LIFE is what you want to eat the majority of the time. This is why a vegetarian or vegan diet is one of the healthiest providing that the person is eating lots of fresh foods and not packaged novelty foods from health food stores.

Follow the steps below: Please note that it is quality not quantity of the foods you eat that makes a difference. If you follow the food choices outlined in the steps below and in the Healthy Healing book you will not have to count calories, or read food labels unless you really want to lol! For the most part the food choices outlined here require eating foods that don't have labels :)

1. Avoid all processed foods. This means avoiding fast food, pre packaged foods and anything that lists ingredients that sound like a science experiment! You may have heard this before if you can't even read it you probably don't want it in your body. These foods contain chemicals in them that hinder immune function and don't contain fresh living healing foods in them. 75% of our daily intake should be from living fresh foods.

2. Avoid sugar and sugar containing foods. It is no surprise that Americans are eating way to much sugar and this is contributing the the rise in illness especially in children who's immune systems are still developing. Soda is actually one of the most consumed "food" by Americans including children! Sugar is a immune suppressors, causes a false energy in the body and is the favorite food of cancer and yeast! It is wise to avoid all sugar while undergoing a healing program. You may want to make an exception for raw honey which has healing and nutritional benefits but this also must be kept in moderation. There are also many other natural sweet choices that you can use in moderation.

Going along with the first two steps is step three: Avoiding all artificial foods. You may be thinking, if I can't have sugar I will have some other sugar substitute. Not at all artificial sweeteners like aspartame are in many cases more harmful to your body than real sugar! The FDA has received more complaints about adverse reactions to aspartame then any other food additive! Aspartame major brand names include NutraSweet and Equal. Just because it is not Aspartame does not mean it is safe, you should avoid unnatural sweeteners. It is just not good policy for your body to eat something that had to be created in a laboratory.

3. Avoid white four and white rice. These foods have no nutritional benefits and have had the life stripped from them, they are essentially dead foods and just don't work in a healing program. Much better choices are whole grains like brown rice, wild rice, millet, buckwheat, quinoa, corn meal, oats, etc.. You can find these grains in flour form as well for healthy baking. Learn how to use these grains and you and your family will be healthier for it!

4. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and other drugs. These things just aren't healthy for you and may contain lots of chemicals, and over stimulate the body and can supply the body with more sugar as in alcohol, soda and coffee consumption. Of course in moderation they probably won't hurt much, it is the overuse of these things that are bad. If you smoke, stop. If you are a soda and coffee drinker stop that as well. You can replace coffee with green tea which has healing and detoxification benefits. Use the steps above for further recommendations for these things.

5. Drink purified or distilled water. You must drink lots of water daily. Think about it, you use water to wash your car, clean your house, etc.. Why wouldn't you use water to clean your insides? I am amazed to meet people who don't drink water or only drink tap water! Many Americans get their water from coffee, soda, juice, and energy drinks. We need pure water that is lacking in chemicals like lead, arsenic and fluoride. This is why filtered by reverse osmosis and or distilled water are best, spring water is also fine. In our home we just by water that we trust and don't worry to much about it. But we don't drink tap water!

I think that I have given you something great recommendations to get you started on a healing program for your hyperthyroidism or Graves disease and just about anything else that is ailing you. I am in the same boat as you, I know it is not always easy to choose the healthiest foods, however it does get easier. This is something for the whole family, including your family will make it easier, maybe not at first but like everything it takes time. Chronic illness didn't just pop up out of nowhere it takes a lifetime for these things like hyperthyroidism to develop and it will take time to eliminate them as well.

For more information I suggest that you have in your home the Healthy Healing book which will give you more detailed info then what I can write on this blog. If you want to buy it please use the link contained in this post you will get a good deal, health foods stores sell this book for about $40-50 dollars, you can get this book at any health food store.

I will be doing a part two of this post for an outline of some other things that you can do daily during a healing, cleansing program. I will also do a post about pantry basics. Stay tuned for that!

In the meantime remember that you are worth doing what has been said here and you don't need the "foods" of this modern age. If you just take the time to plan meals, stock your pantry and include your family in meal preparation and health education it can become second nature to you.

I promise it is about loving yourself, changing your mindset, habits and just eating to live, thrive and be healthy, not eating to survive! Many Americans today just eat enough food and drink enough beverage so they don't die right away but this is a slow death and is lacking the quality of life that we all deserve.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about what you can do for your health and the elimination of your ailments.

Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is a popular video game created in Japan. My children love the characters and story line. The main character is Crono spelled without the h as in the tile. Here are some cool drawings of Crono made by my children.

I Do It All For Love

When things get tough I am tempted to send the kids to school, I will admit. Then I come to my senses and I can't see how that would be better than what we are doing now. We are a family, we must stay together and learn, live, thrive together no matter how hard it may be sometimes. I also know that when I learn how to cope in a healthy way I can teach it to my children and we all win. Never stop learning don't give up like most people do when things get to hard, that is the best advice anyone can give. "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." that is what we are called to do.

Our Halloween 2012

Halloween fun!

First of all I hope you all had fun and safe Halloween with your families! We didn't do to much this year. The kids dressed up again in there Mario and Luigi costumes, watched a movie or two, then we went to my parents house to take the kids to visit my niece.

We were supposed to be there earlier but decided to continue as planned. At the last minute I decided to bring our Pomeranian, ironically named Angel, with us, she always makes such a fuss when we go someplace. Naturally she loves going places so who am I to keep her at home all the time. I never imagined what was going to come of it, this Halloween!

When we got to my parents house my niece was busy so we went to my aunts house across the street for a little visit and trick or treating. After that we went back over to my parents house. The kids immediately started playing and having fun!

What a cute chick!

Before I continue with our Halloween story let me back up a few days. A few days ago my niece dropped by after school. At her school they were learning about chicken development and now had some new baby chicks in her class. Well, one of the chicks got to come home with my niece and she was very exited about it!

The kids had fun for a little while playing with the chick and it was so cute! I remember being a kid and every year around Ester time we would get some baby chicks, kids love chicks.

Back to my Halloween story.

So it is Halloween 2012, the kids are all having fun and eating candy. I was sitting down visiting my parents and talking with my mom. We had to be there about 30 min when I noticed my niece with her head covered but she didn't say anything. Then my oldest son says "Angel has the baby chick!"

We all had forgotten in the excitement of Halloween that little chick! I totally forgot that earlier this week my niece had obtained this chick. I also did not expect that it would be sitting in a box in the back of the dinning room.

As soon as we noticed Angel she dropped it and ran away from it. What the kids thought was confirmed. she had gotten to the chick and killed it! Now my niece is crying! Her baby chick that she was loving and caring for was killed by our dog!

I felt so bad! This is the 3rd animal that our dog Angel has killed in the 5 years that we have had her. A few years ago she had killed a huge rat outside and then a baby bird in the yard the following year. I posted about the bird fiasco titled, A Lesson for the Kids!

A dog is a dog.

I don't blame her after all she is a dog. It was nothing to her and she didn't know that this chick was something to my niece.

As far as she new someone left a perfectly good meal just sitting in a box! Obviously after the fact she new she had done something wrong because we were all upset at her.

Now, ,niece is crying and my children are also upset. My 6 year old says "this is the worst Halloween ever!" Obviously it could always be worst but this was not expected at all. We probably should have stayed home or not have brought the dog, but who new?

Another lesson for the kids.

We all learned that we need to be more mindful of the people and animals in our life. We should have asked more questions and just paid more attention to what was going on. We also learned a valuable lesson about nature and nurture. My niece had been being a mom to this little chick and our carnivorous canine felt the call of nature and took a bite!

I think we city folk sometimes forget the role that animals play in our world, especially our cute and loving pets. We often forget that our cute and cuddly pets are animals first and our family members second.

Final thoughts.

Thanks for taking the time to read our Halloween story. I am still sad that this happened but that's life. Today my dad was going to get a replacement chick for my niece. The irony of the whole thing is that a few days ago when we first met the chick we casually said "don't let Angel near it or she may eat it!" Today we are pretty much over it. All we can do from this experience and all experiences is just learn from it and move on.

If you haven't already please read my post titled Halloween, where I talk about Halloween and what it really means.

Halloween

Halloween

With Halloween closely approaching I wanted to post something about it here. This time of year especially, Halloween is cause for many questions from my children, and rightly so! They really don't like the scary stuff and we really don't either, although I understand it has it's place as Jimmy Akin is saying in the video below. Early on in my children's life we passed out candy on Halloween and the kids enjoyed dressing up as they do everyday of the year. Costumes and pretending is a huge part of growing up and playing, there is nothing wrong with that. Halloween is no exception!

I remember one Halloween, my oldest was three years old, and we were passing out candy together when we opened the door for my son to see his first "Scream Movie" mask. He screamed and ran away, the boy took it off and said "don't be scared I am just a kid" this made me think. How could a child who knew nothing of these scary images become so scared at his first reaction to it? I thought about how it was so natural to us as humans to get scared, especially when it is something that symbolizes evil.

How did my three year old son ignorant to evil and what evil is, become so scarred at his very first encounter? This told me that being frightened of evil and running away from it was a very natural human response. This is a good thing! After that we decided not to celebrate Halloween with negative images and I began to see Halloween for what it was actually designed to be about. We had already decided that our children would not go trick or treating, and that was a good choice for us.

I never thought it logical to tell my kids all year long not to take candy from strangers then once a year take them to all the strangers houses we could to ask for some candy. Trick or treating may fit into your logic, and that is OK, just please be safe. As a child I enjoyed trick or treating with no danger, and I survived! Like dressing up in costumes trick or treating isn't something that's inherently evil. Last year, we did take the kids around to close friend, and families houses. and will likely do some of that this year as well. My children today still don't like many of the scary images, and symbols that most people enjoy during this time of year.

Origins of The Word Halloween...

Upon my research of Halloween I learned that the word Halloween itself does not refer to evil as much as it is about the Saints, and Souls in general. Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of its original title "All Hallows' Evening"), also known as All Hallows' Eve, is a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows. Simply it means the eve of All Saints Day.

The three day Halloween celebration is referred to as the All Hallow Mass in reference to the eve of All Saints Day, All Saints Day on November 1st, and All Souls Day on Nov 2nd. In Websters Dictionary it is referred to as All Hallows Even and it is simply called the day before All Saints Day. The word Halloween was first used in the 16th century, and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows'-Even 'evening', that is, the night before All Hallows' Day. Although the phrase All Hallows' is found in Old English (ealra halgena mæssedæg; mass-day of all saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not seen until 1556.

So, what is it all about?

Halloween reminds us of our own mortality and should be a time when we also remember those who have passed before us. On All Saints Day we remember those faithful Christian martyrs who in their earthly life suffered many things for the Christian faith, many of them dieing for the Faith. And remembering and honoring all of those who have passed on to be with Jesus in Heaven. All Souls Day is a day that the Church has set aside each year to commemorate and pray for all souls. Another popular name in English is Feast of All Souls. In some other languages the celebration, not necessarily on the same date, is known as Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos or de los Difuntos in Spanish-speaking countries; halottak napja in Hungary; Yom el Maouta in Lebanon, Israel and Syria).

We can ask the Saints to pray for us, which I make it a point to do. In return they Glorify God with their prayers on our behalf, right there in Heaven! Prayer especially the Catholic Mass being the most fundamental and powerful way that we worship and Glorify God. What a gift God has given us in the Saints! I encourage everyone to study the lives of the Saints, as an addition to your faith based reading.

Here are a few Scripture verses relevant to what I just said and that indicate our relationship to the Saints.

"It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins." (2 Mac 12:46 DR)

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us." (Heb 12:1)

"If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples." (John 15:7-8)

"Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints." (Rev 5:8)

"And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand." (Rev 8:4)

On All Souls Day we are reminded of all the souls, even our own, many of whom really need us to pray for them!

What About Scary Images?

One common image we see used for Halloween is ghosts as expected. Ghosts can serve as a reminder to us that Halloween (the eve of All Saints followed by All Souls Day) is about the dead.

Things like Monsters and Witches are really just a part of folklore in pretty much any cultural tradition on the planet. Just as ghost stories are apart of sitting by a campfire. Also during Halloween the images of Zombies and bodily resurrection can remind us (although imperfectly) of the hope of Christian Resurrection. Although our Zombie stories, and images don't do it much justice!

It is up to the discretion of each individual what decorations they will use on Halloween and of course how they will be used. In our home we don't put up much decorations, but I do love ghosts and skeletons. Other popular Halloween items include pumpkins, Apple's, and anything fallish since Halloween is a fall celebration.

The Halloween Samhain link

Halloween also falls on the same day as many popular harvest festivals of the past, like Samhain. Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the 'darker half' of the year. During winter they believed that the invisible world, and the physical world came together, causing many mischievous things, and some horrible things to happen to the people. They also believed that the sun god died in winter, and came back to life in spring.

In my research on Halloween, and other festivals of the same day, Halloween is a separate day to any other celebration, even if celebrated on the same day. Clearly a holiday being held on the same day as another does not constitute saying that they are the same celebration, unlike what many people may claim about Halloween, and Samhain. Just because a method of celebration, or an individual practice used in a celebration is similar, or the same even, to another holiday does not go to prove that one comes from the other, or a direct link. This still logically does not constitute the claim that one holiday originated in the other. There is just no proof that Halloween and Samhain are one and the same holiday.

Costumes, for example are used in many celebrations around the world such as the Jewish holiday of Purim.  We would not say that the Jews are celebrating Halloween when they celebrate Purim due to the fact that they participate in costume wearing. Likewise all costume parties aren't Halloween parties. We also would not associate one holiday with another just because it falls on the same day as another holiday. I really feel strongly that intention and purpose has everything to do with it. We still must be careful about the messages that we put out into the world that is why logic, and common sense must always come into play.

All through out history humans have thought alike, lived alike, believed many of the same things as people do today. This alone can account for the many similarities in many of our holiday celebrations, customs, and cultures. The fact that there are similarities is not enough to say that one originated in the other. I will say that Halloween has been hijacked by some groups who make up all sorts of reasons why they are celebrating it. Those who identify as witches and Satan worshippers may use Halloween as a day to do what ever it is they do, believing some how it's the devils birthday (as if he had one) or the Pagan festival of Samhain, or any other horrible spin someone wants to put on it. I will add without a shred of proof! In fact just believing that Haloween is satanic or the devils birthday is doing the Devil a favor.

So should we celebrate Halloween? If you want to. But now that you know what Halloween is really supposed to be about maybe you should try celebrating it at Mass this year for All Saints, and All Soul's Day. Spend the three day Halloween celebration thinking about those you love who have passed on who may need our prayers, and those who are in heaven praying for you!

My final thoughts

When it comes to Halloween it is a matter of doing what feels comfortable to your family, and your beliefs. This may mean adapting Halloween to your families needs as I have done, or simple not celebrating at all, but that is up to each individual family. Many families enjoy dressing up like Saints or other non-scary characters. While others prefer scary or non religious themes.
